Laboratory Strengthening Program

One of the most critical aspects of a viable higher education infrastructure is science and technology. The majority of institutions in Sindh lack institutional capacity to engage in significant research and development, and there is an urgent need to build and modernize these scientific institutions. Purpose of this programme is to strengthen and upgrade the existing Laboratories in Public Sector Universities of Sindh. On the basis of strong reasoning and a cost-benefit analysis, the grant is provided to Public Sector Universities to purchase small to medium-sized scientific equipment and relevant materials. Sindh HEC focused the newly chartered Universities in Sindh to strengthen the laboratory and its infrastructure to develop and foster the culture of research.

Sindh Research Support Program

Sindh Research Support Programme (SRSP) is Sindh Higher Education Commission’s major research programme for awarding competitive research grants for high-quality and prospective scientific research initiatives that demonstrate strategic significance and cast influence on local industry and society. This programme was started in 2020 with a budget of Rs. 50 million which has now swelled upto Rs. 100 million. Contributions relevant to both basic and applied research are welcomed. Purpose of SRSP is to promote scientific excellence and knowledge growth by allowing researchers to develop their own research concept and method.

ISLAMIC BANKING AND FINANCE

The Government designed and adopted the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) in 2015. NFIS establishes Pakistan’s national vision, structure, action plan, and targets for financial inclusion. It is worth noting that the NFIS objectives are completely aligned with the government’s priorities of achieving inclusive economic growth through improved access to finance and deposit base, promotion of small and medium enterprises, easy and affordable access to finance for farmers, facilitation of low-cost housing finance, and provision of Shari’ah compliant banking solutions.

CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (CEP)

Capacity improvement entails the long-term development of people’s and institutions’ capabilities in order to improve their competency and problem-solving abilities. These capabilities help people to convert information into knowledge that they can use to solve day-to-day difficulties. Capacity building is an investment in people and systems that will allow the universities of the province to fulfil their development goals.

TRAINING ON MOODLE

Moodle is a free and open-source learning management system (LMS) written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. It is designed to support both teaching and learning. Moodle training provides trainee with the insights required to stay informed and efficient in day-to-day activities/administration of the LMS. Trainee gains the competence and confidence to manage the Moodle site and supports faculty / colleagues accordingly.

Digitization Initiatives in Universities, Gaps Suggestions and Way Forward

Digital technologies are at the heart of modern education systems, workplaces and learning environments, changing the way we teach and learn. This workshop intended for decision-makers (Registrar, Controller of Examinations and Chief Technology Officer) administrative and academic staff of Sindh province universities and Degree awarding Institutions, who would like to learn more about strategies, practices and tools for embedding digital technologies in administration, teaching and learning. The goal of this workshop was to help participants to advance their knowledge, understanding, and fluency with digital learning trends, methods and tools implemented by other developed Universities/Institutions of Sindh. The presentations from ORACLE, SAP and Microsoft were also given on their industry approved solutions. The IT working group rigorously working on the procurement/development of digitalization processes and its implementation.

HANDS-ON TRAINING ON KOHA: AN INTEGRATED LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

KOHA is an open source integrated Library Management System (LMS), which is used as an effective way to automate library operations without undertaking substantial financial investment by using Open Source Software. Libraries are adopting Open Source Software as a way to reduce the costs of expensive commercial products and as a viable alternative to the often- expensive proprietary library automation systems. It also increases the autonomy and control of the professional over software solutions. The Sindh HEC in its endeavors to promote and accelerate IT based Automation drive, trained the relevant professionals in universities of the province. A THREE-DAY interactive training program on “KOHA” was organized. The purpose of this training was to encourage, facilitate and strengthen the libraries in universities.

The programme was arranged in Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro where the library professionals from different universities attended the training.

Emerging Trends in applied and action research of university-industry linkages and Challenges in Pakistan’s context

Since rapid increase in technologies has led the industries to be more sophisticated and more high-tech, role of universities in the processes of invention, innovation, and commercialization has widely been emphasized and acknowledged to transform basic research towards applied and action research in order to come out of welfare concept for positive change in human conditions at all ages and stages of life.

Therefore, Sindh HEC has conducted a series of interactive sessions, training programs, workshops and advocacy seminars in Institutions of Higher Education of Sindh to promote Technological Entrepreneurship, Small Medium Enterprises Business Administration, High-Tech Transformation and IP culture.

The purpose of this rigorous exercise is to provide prerequisite research-oriented information and technical skills through professionals from diverse fields of academia and industry, promote applied research and action research in all potential areas based on discipline specific case studies and provide guidelines about broadening the concept of ORIC to change academia’s orientation towards entrepreneurship and innovation, conducting interactive sessions for reciprocal of productive ideas and sharing experiences and potential challenges and providing training programs relating to creating linkages between Academia and Industry.

Sindh Higher Education Commission in its endeavors to promote and accelerate its pragmatic research drive works with universities of Sindh on priority basis to find means and ways to implement more than mentioned above. In quest of this, events such as ORIC Awareness Seminars, ORIC week celebration in public sector universities of Sindh, Director ORIC Sindh Conferences are arranged while publication of Industrial Research Journal& ORIC Newsletter for Sindh is planned for future tasks.

Smart Class Rooms to the Newly Established Universities

Smart class in a university is an innovative concept in education. Nowadays, we live in the internet age, so our education system is also going to be online. In this environment, e-learning and online education are the need of this time. The use of smart classrooms in universities is not a dream, but it is necessary. Sindh HEC initiated the program to grant the funding to establish Smart classrooms in all Public Sector Universities of Sindh. In the first phase, the Sindh HEC funded 7 public sector universities.

Honorable Chief Minister Sindh handed over the cheques of Rs Three million to the selected universities on 8th April 2021. Vice-Chancellors of following universities received the cheques:

  2. Benazir Bhutto University of Technology and Skill Development, Khairpur Mirs
  3. College University, Hyderabad

INTER-VARSITY COMPETITIONS

Non-academic curriculum components such as co-curricular activities aid in the development of students personality in a variety of ways. Emotional, physical, spiritual, and moral development are complemented and supplemented by co-curricular activities for all-round development. They are essential components of educational institutions that help students grow as individuals while also improving the quality of instruction they receive in the classroom.

In quest of the same, in collaboration with GC University Hyderabad, Sindh HEC Conducted a THREE-DAY events comprising of Tri-Lingual Speech Competition, Competition for designing logo for Sindh HEC and Skit Competition in which Sindh HEC granted an amount of Rs. 1.71 million for these three competitions. Students from various universities across Sindh participated in the event.

RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE 2022

Introducing the inventions and discoveries to the industries and later commercializing them, helps universities’ research results reach the public. Companies that license inventions can perform the development, testing, manufacturing, and distribution not available at Universities for medical devices, pharmaceuticals, software, sensors, new fruit and grain varieties, and machines. In quest of the same, Sindh Higher Education Commission conducted a TWO DAY SHOWCASE EXHIBITION at Expo Center Karachi in collaboration with NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi to introduce the inventions and discoveries of teachers and students belonging to Public and Private Sector Universities of Sindh to the prominent industry officials of Sindh / Pakistan. Purpose was to establish industry-academia linkage.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Under this initiative, Sindh Higher Education Commission trains the faculty members of public and private sector universities. Sindh HEC believes that high-quality teaching is key to classroom proceedings as well as academic management and it will demonstrate Sindh HEC’s commitment to this principle. This programme helps strengthen the profession of teaching in Sindh by providing substantial professional learning opportunities and modeling high effective education practice. In addition, FDP will promote teaching innovations, improve faculty’s andragogic knowledge and skills, help university and affiliated college teacher to achieve their career goals and also support excellence by striving to model best practices in teaching and learning within all of its classes and by providing high quality development opportunities for all University and College teachers on one hand and academic management on the other. Since this idea has just been translated practically into a programme, Course and Contents are being designed for the training of Faculties across province.
